📣Extension of the Period of Stay for Parents of Foreign Students Enrolled in Korea (from February 26, 2026) 📣
Hello, this is Danuri Call Center 1577-1366 of the Korean Institute for Healthy Family.
We would like to share some information that may be helpful.
The Ministry of Justice has extended the period of stay for parents and guardians (hereinafter referred to as “parents”) of foreign children born in Korea or who entered the country during childhood, allowing them to remain in Korea until the child reaches age of 24, provided that the child has been enrolled in elementary, middle, or high school in Korea and has been granted legal residency status.
Under previous regulations, parents were permitted to stay for only one year after the child graduated from high school or became an adult (age 19). Recently, there have been many requests to extend the parents’ period of stay so that children can continue to receive parental protection and support while preparing for independence, such as by attending university or acquiring job skills.
In response, the Ministry of Justice has decided to extend parents’ stay until the child reaches the age of 24, not only to guarantee the child’s right to education but also to allow the child to settle and continue their education after reaching adulthood. This measure has been in effect since February 26, 2026.
